Fluvanna County school systems only
had a budget enough for traditional art mediums. When I decided a discipline
for college, I became acutely aware of how uneducated I was in art. My mother
convinced me to chose Graphic Design, though I knew nothing about it.
So I walked into Longwood University blind because I knew nothing about
Graphic Design and could only use a PC. The singular click of an Apple mouse
threw me off and I'd find myself using PC codes that often did something
decidedly different. The first program I latched onto was Adobe Illustrator,
fascinated by the varied styles a vector program could create.
Illustrator
was the easiest to learn, because of the parallel to traditional drawing.
Adobe Photoshop and QuarkXPress followed,
albeit more slowly. Within four years I had learned a whole new approach to
art, and decidedly, loved it far more.
Traditional art gave me the talent to see details, and graphic design gave
me the skill to exploit it. Subsequently, Fluvanna County High School finally
got a Graphic Design program, giving other students a chance to learn what
I have. My journey has been long, and often had more steps than other peoples'.
But the more I think on it, I wouldn't have it any other
way.
